At Jolie Captures, I believe photography should be an inclusive, stress-free experience that allows you to be fully present in the moment. With Mother's Day Mini sessions just around the corner, I want to share some helpful tips to ensure your session goes smoothly–so you can focus on making memories rather than worrying about the details!
1. Choose outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable
One of the most common questions I get is: What should I wear for our mini session? The key is to choose outfits that feel like you while complementing each other. Here are some quick tips:
• Stick to a cohesive color palette: Soft neutrals, pastels, and earthy tones photograph beautifully.
• Avoid busy patterns and logos: They can be distracting in photos. Instead, opt for textures like knits or linen.
• Comfort is key: If you're constantly adjusting your outfit, you won't feel at ease. Choose something you can move in and feel confident wearing.
For Mother's Day Mini Sessions, flowy dresses, soft sweaters, and simple accessories can create an elegant and timeless look. If you're including little ones, make sure they're comfy too!
2. Mini sessions help kids get comfortable with photoshoots
If you have little ones, mini sessions are a great way to introduce them to the idea of a professional photoshoot in a low-pressure, fun environment.
Young children may feel shy or unsure at first, but a short and playful session helps them get familiar with me and the camera–making future full-length shoots much easier. Over time, they'll learn that photoshoots are just another fun adventure, rather than something to be nervous about!
3. Arrive a few minutes early and relax
Mini sessions are designed to be quick and efficient, so arriving on time (or even a little early) gives you a moment to breathe before jumping in. Take a deep breath, shake out any nerves, and trust that we'll create something beautiful together!
If you're bringing children, giving them a few minutes to explore the space can help them feel more comfortable before we start snapping photos.
4. Embrace candid moments
Not every photo needs to be perfectly posed–and honestly, some of the best moments come when you're simply being yourself. Whether it's a giggle between you and your child, a gentle hand squeeze, or a shared smile, those little moments tell the most meaningful stories.
Instead of focusing on cheese, focus on connection. Play with your kids, whisper something sweet to your partner, or simply hold hands and be in the moment.
5. Don't stress about the kids being "perfect"
As a lifestyle photographer, I expect movement, energy, and real emotions–so please don't worry if your little one gets a case of the wiggles. Some of my favorite shots come from kids running into their parent's arms or showing off their playful side.
The best thing you can do? Go with the flow. The more relaxed you are, the more your kids will feel at ease to!
6. Trust the process (and enjoy it)
My goal is to make your mini session feel effortless and fun. I'll guide you through natural poses and prompts that bring out your authentic connections, so there's no need to stress about how to pose or what to do with your hands. Just focus on being present, and I'll handle the rest.
At the end of the day, your mini session is about celebrating your story–whether it's the quiet in-between moments or the joyful laughter.
